 Jobs!
Alright, so who has a job? What is? What do you do? Do you like your job? Ever want to kill your boss? I'm kidding. Sort of. I work in retail. More specifically in a women's clothing store called Cato. We have Juniors and Plus sizes clothes, shoes, belts, accessories, jewelry, and other crap like notebooks, pens, mirrors, etc... I like most of our clothing. So I shop there (with my 20 percent discount yay!) I like my job most days. Most being the keyword. My job consists of ringing up sales, layaways, taking Cato charge card payments, doing returns and exchanges, putting clothes on the floor when needed, unpacking new shipments when needed, letting people into the fitting rooms, keeping the clothes neat, occasionally dressing mannequins, helping people find stuff, doing floor checks, holds, put clothes back on the floor from the fitting rooms, and a bit of cleaning before closing. I dress dowdy middle aged women. I want to stab people who don't rehang their clothes after getting out of the fitting room. They just throw it over the rack. I also want to stab people who try on tons of clothes, and don't buy any of them. Gee thanks, I'd love to put back all of those clothes. People who fail to tell me they have a return or exchange or people who want to change their transaction make me want to hurt them. More than that, I want to stab people who have a return, paid with debit or credit, but want cash back. Just because, you know, if they were intending on keeping the stuff then why should they care if it takes 3 - 5 days for the money to be credited back? People who ask me to take things off the mannequins, and then don't buy said stuff are le sucky. Then I have to redress the mannequin, and you wasted my time. So yeah. It sounds likes I hate my job, doesn't it? XD I really don't. I like chatting with customers. I like doing sales. I enjoy helping people find things. And most days are good, even if they are busy lately.

 Re: Jobs!
Working in customer service, especially retail, is not always fun. I totally understand your frustrations with your job, Ki.
I work for a condo developer. My uncle used to own the company, and he brought me in to be an assistant to his daughter (my cousin), who did the sales, but I quickly became a sales person as well because we were so busy. I started in August 2006, and moved 6 hours away from my family (in Saskatchewan), to another province (Alberta) and stayed there for a few years. In March 2010, we started building in Saskatchewan and I jumped at the chance to move back home. My uncle has retired and two managers have taken over ownership of the company, and I think they are running it a lot better. When my uncle was in charge, the company grew really fast and he took on way too much responsibility so some things just weren't updated or didn't get done.
In addition to condo sales, I also started doing mortgages for our condos in July 2010. That has kept me really busy lately! Our condos have a special assistance program that helps people get into home ownership so they sell very fast and the mortgages are usually not easy ones. I have sold or co-sold over 500 condos and houses in the past 6 years. Now that I am selling in Saskatoon, I am running a one-person office so I do the sales, mortgages, and administration, like sending paperwork to lawyers and banks, as well as taking all the calls, responding to emails, dealing with walk-ins, and reporting to head office.
I do like my job - I have a lot of freedom and I don't have to work weekends at the show home anymore. People who just walk into my office without an appointment annoy me because, more often than not, I am busy with other clients or just with paperwork that needs to be done. I am also expected to take evening appointments, outside of regular work hours, which sucks for having any type of schedule. I have finally started coming in later in the morning when I have to stay later in the evening. But then people complain that I'm not in the office at 8:00 when they call or stop by unannounced...
I had a falling out with a couple of co-workers about 2 years ago, which made me consider quitting, but I stuck it out. I am the sales person who has been with the company the longest so I think I am pretty valuable to the company. The construction manager in Saskatoon is super awesome and I get along with him really well so that helps. If I am stressed or have a problem, he is always willing to help or just listen to me complain.
That being said, it is my dream to not have to work in customer service one day...

 Re: Jobs!
It's not but it has both its good and bad moments. The sad thing is that I have to find a new job at the start of the year. My work is too far, and I don't get enough hours (so I don't get paid enough). I hate to leave since I really do like it, and I love the people I work with. I could stay, and probably get promoted but I don't know when that might happen.
That sounds like a really challenging job, Lola! Doing mortgages sounds frightening. Having a lot of freedom sounds really appealing though. And liking your job sure makes things easier, I know. Since you do sales, are you a real estate agent? (I hope that's not an absurd question XD)

 Re: Jobs!
I work for a supermarket chain called IGA (Independent Grocers of Australia). It's kind of difficult to explain how it works, but each store is independent and owned and operated by each store's manager as opposed to a 'big office', but every store is kind of 'linked' together with how they run their specials and prices and everything. Anyway, it's a 9-aisled store, which is pretty small, and there's only 5 registers so it's not like a massive supermarket or anything. Because of that there's only really 2 departments, the registers and then everything else. I'm one of the 'everything else' people. Basically, I work for 4 hours Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5:30-9:30 closing the store, so making sure the produce department is full and pretty, running the milk, running the coolroom and freezer as well as sweeping and mopping the floor when we close at 9. The grocery load truck arrives of Tuesdays and Fridays, so I start work at 2:30 on those days, help unpack everything onto the shelves until 5:30 when I start doing what I usually do of a night. Sunday mornings I work from 7am-4pm, and that basically involves doing everything I do of a night time in reverse, as well as stripping the ends (the specials run from Monday to Monday, and at the very end of each aisle we usually have shelves set up specifically for the specials of the week to go so we can sell more of them) and setting up the ends for next week's specials, which is actually really fun because I get to pick what goes onto display and where it goes. After all that's done, I usually fill the chips and drink aisle so they don't have to do it that night, as well as keeping on top of produce, the milk, the coolroom and freezer as well as the bread.
I think the best thing about working for an independent supermarket is that when I go to university next year, when I come back home for my breaks I'll be able to keep working there because they're so informal and relaxed about their employees.
I like most of my coworkers. Most of them. I get along a lot better with the checkout girls than I do with the other grocery guys but eh, what are you going to do.

I work at a grocery store called King Soopers. I'm a cashier there. I mostly just work at a cash register or self-checkout but sometimes I do shop-back or facing or very rarely I am sent to help other departments.

 Re: Jobs!
We have IGA's in Canada too, Draik. Most of them have been taken over by Sobey's but there are still a few around in Saskatchewan. It stands for Independent Grocers Alliance here. It's cool that you can pick up shifts when you are home over your University breaks! I used to work at a grocery store so I can relate to all the things you listed - unpacking the truck, filling milk, freezer, produce... I actually liked working in the grocery store, especially when I moved into the office. Except that day when I was just learning how to do everything that I started the new sale two days early... over the weekend... that was not great...

 Re: Jobs!
Sometimes self-checkout can drive me crazy. I do not like watching over ten of them when its insanely busy or having to spend more than four hours at the self-checkout. I've decided that it would be much better if people needed to pass an IQ test before using them.
Also I'm frustrated that everyone at my work hates each other. (Names abbreviated because I'm paranoid) J hates M, M hates J, M hates Kr, everyone except M hates Ka. I want everyone to just get along. No more drama please.

 Re: Jobs!
Lol, since I have worked at a grocery store, I understand your pain at the self-checkout, Shadow! It's not that difficult but some people just don't get it. It's painful to wait in line and watch; I can't imagine having to oversee and deal with them!
Work drama sucks. I feel like people should be able to get along in the adult world, even if they don't like each other. I do not like one of my co-workers, just the sound of her voice gets under my skin, but I am civil and friendly with her. I don't want to hang out with her outside of work, but I can be an adult and work with her.

 Re: Jobs!
Some people are just incredibly stupid. *nod*
Hum I think everyone at my work gets along. Every now and then I hear the assistant managers grumble about the store manager putting more work on them. But it's still all good. Guess it's how I feel about them sometimes. :P I like everyone at my work. I wasn't sure I liked one of the assistant managers but she's growing on me. She's just a little different than the other managers. And I work 90 percent of the time with one of the three managers. I've only been working with the other associates on Fridays and Saturdays this month since we need the extra coverage. One of them is super talkative, and friendly. The other one is either shy or just doesn't like people. Not sure. XD

 Re: Jobs!
I don't usually have problems with people I work with. The only one I can remember is when I was in high school, I worked at a Youth Center, which was in a really small town so it was just a pool table, ping pong table, and a tv with some couches and junk food, and they hired another girl from my class. We weren't friends, but we were enemies either, but she was so lazy and annoying that I didn't even try to mask my dislike of her. She actually asked the manager to sit down and try to work it out between us, lol. I don't know why, I don't think I was really mean to her...that doesn't sound like me.

 Re: Jobs!
Ugh lazy people. D: I think I'd be the same way. I don't go out of my way to show disdain for people but I just won't try to be nice. Funny thing happened to me today (since we were talking about co-workers)! I went to the Cato store closer to my house to shop and ran into a girl who worked at our store until recently. She transferred to the store I was shopping in. And she was asking me how I was getting along one of the managers at my store. I'm like, "Good, I guess." And she's like, "Oh really?" And I'm like, "Yeaaah." XD I already knew she didn't like her. But I get along with her. So I can't hate on her. Then she says she missed one of the other managers. We agreed there since that manager is also my fave to work with.

 Re: Jobs!
My mom is one of my co-workers. Thankfully, she works in a different city than I do. I love my mom and she does a good job but we fall into too much of a mother-daughter rhythm when we work together - I lose patience with her way too quickly (usually on computer-related things) and she tries to tell me what to do. It's better that we don't work too closely.
We had our company Christmas party last Friday, for the Saskatoon office, and I was really impressed that on of the owners made the 5-hour trip from Medicine Hat just for the party. It was nice to have him there. I had set it up - just a supper at the Brazilian Steak House and making sure our gifts were there - and he thanked me profusely for it. It was nice to feel appreciated.

 Re: Jobs!
Oh man, that'd be me and my Mom too if we worked together. My Mom drives me nuts with computer questions.
Our store manager is actually my ex-aunt? Yeah, not sure what you'd call that. XD She was married to my Mom's brother but they divorced nearly 7 years ago. But they were married 8-ish years. So I saw her at family things and such. She bought me one of my favorite Christmas presents, and she was always my favorite aunt (being the only proper nice one). When I started working at the store in October I hadn't seen her in a few years. Talk about strange. And some people in my family don't care much for her (to do with the divorce). But I always liked her, and I still do. I don't care to judge her relationship past or present with my uncle.

 Re: Jobs!
Speaking of relatives as bosses... my old manager at my first job at the Deli was the ex-girlfriend of one of my uncles... who left him for a woman.
I didn't even know she was the boss, it was an extremely awkward first shift when she was showing me around.

 Re: Jobs!
Whoa Jack, that would be awkward.
I bet it was awkward to see your ex-aunt again, Ki, but it's cool that you get to see her now since she was one of your favourite aunts. I think it's really mature of you to just not worry about her relationship with your uncle; what ever happened was between them and it shouldn't stop you from having a professional, and even friendly relationship with her.
I prefer not to work too closely with family anymore... my uncle used to be my boss and his daughter (my cousin) is my co-worker... we had a misunderstanding last year that has forever changed our relationship. We're okay now but will never be as close as we used to be because the trust was broken. I would rather not let work ruin my family relationships. It is better now that my uncle has retired and I work for someone I'm not related to. I like my new boss and we get along well and can have friendly chats, but our relationship is 90% business and that's exactly what I want!

 Re: Jobs!
Omg Jack, that takes the cake, I think. XD
It was awkward. I wasn't sure she would treat me. She seemed kinda weird about helping me get a job there. I got the feeling she only did it out of a favor for my grandma (who she's still good friends with). And thanks. :) It shouldn't really, and I'm glad it didn't. We get along great at work. She's my boss, but it's all good.
I don't think I would either. Working with family is odd. Like I said, I was worried about working with this ex-aunt, mostly because she's still good friends with my grandma. I'm really sorry about your and your cousin. I've had relationships turn out like that and it's horrible, and heartbreaking, really.
