Offtopic: This happened my junior year. If you passed the state (I live in the U.S.) mandated exams you didn't have to take any finals in your classes. Most of my teachers made the finals projects instead, then, so they could get around this rule. Instead of a final being a small portion of your grade the projects were long-going and therefore worth a substantial portion. Not long after, the school dropped the exemption and everyone had to take finals, regardless.
